Interested in attending SMU Dedman School of Law?

On Wednesday, September 23, from 1 – 2 pm, we will have Jill Nikirk, the Assistant Dean for Admissions at SMU Dedman School of Law, on campus to speak to our students about the programs that SMU offers and their admissions process. We are meeting in Galaxy Room B.

SMU is the most common choice among our prelaw students for its reputation in the DFW legal market and its proximity to home. Please join us for what is sure to be an informative and helpful event.

Holiday Party

The JMPLS will be having a Holiday Party on Thursday, December 3rd from 4 PM – 6 PM in the Founders Atrium. There will be plenty of food, music, and a tacky sweater competition (winner gets the grand prize of 2,500 cents!… $25 dollars, in case you got stuck). So come out, socialize, and meet your fellow members!

This event will also serve as a farewell to our beloved Dr. Champagne as he transitions into semi-retirement! Please stop by to give your wishes to him before he leaves us for the Spring term!

Law School Expo

The UTD Law School Admissions Expo will be on Friday, November 6th in the Visitor Information Center (the open area in front of the Bookstore) from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM. This is a wonderful time to gain an enormous amount of information about law schools and meet with admissions representatives from across the country. There will be 100 law school representatives there, including all of the Texas law schools. Suggested attire for this event is business casual.

Anne Dutia will be hosting two workshops this fall. One workshop will general law school applications tips, and the other will focus on building your personal statement. We encourage EVERYONE to go to both!

Federal District Judge Richard Schell

Federal District Judge Richard Schell will be speaking to Dr. Champagne’s Civil Liberties class and interested pre-law students on Wednesday, February 6 from 2:30-3:45 PM in the School of Management Building.  The room number is 1.107.

Judge Schell received his law degree from SMU in 1975.  He was then an assistant district attorney in Collin County in 1976,  He was in private practice from 1977-1982.  He then became a County-Court-at-Law Judge in Collin County from 1982-1986 and a state District Judge from 1986-1988.  He was appointed a Federal District Judge for the Eastern District of Texas by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.  From 1994-2001 he served as Chief Judge for the Eastern District of Texas.  Please join us!

January General Meeting

John Marshall Pre-Law Society is kicking off the new semester with our first Spring 2013 General Meeting!  Join us to learn about upcoming events and other opportunities Pre-Law will offer.  The event will be held on Wednesday, January 30th at noon in Founders 2.608.

We will also be hosting a guest speaker: Nathan Neely, Associate Director of Admissions at the University of Houston Law School.  He will be speaking about opportunities in intellectual property law.  And of course, like any proper JMPLS meeting, we will have free pizza!
